Surviving and thriving: Your guide to first year
Hi, I’m Aisha, a second year Politics, Philosophy, and Economics student. Since starting university last year, I’ve learned loads of useful tips and tricks; from making friends to managing money, here’s three things you need to know about surviving your first year.
1. Finding your tribe: How do you really make new friends?
Worried about making friends? So was I! Remember, everyone is in the same boat, and most people come to university looking to make new friends. Don’t be discouraged if your flatmates or course mates aren’t your forever friends — there are plenty of people to meet. It will take time to find your group and you’ll have to put yourself out there to meet new people. I joined the debate society and met amazing people through something I genuinely enjoy.
Here’s my advice: During Welcome Week, be open to conversations and attend as many events as possible. With over 300 clubs & societies at the union, you’re bound to find like-minded people with similar interests. Step out of your comfort zone –whether it’s dance club or book club, there is something for everyone.
2. Mastering your schedule: How do you find time for everything?
University life demands more self-discipline and independence than school and college — something that I wasn’t prepared for. In my first year, I struggled with time management, balancing lectures, revision, and socialising. So, a planner became my best friend. I started scheduling study sessions, deadlines and personal time.
Here’s my advice: Create a routine from the get-go. Block out time for study sessions and deadlines but also remember to prioritize the activities that are important to you, like gym sessions or society events. By scheduling these in your planner, you can balance personal activities with academic responsibilities.

3. Stretching your budget: How do you make your money last?
Managing finances independently can be tricky, especially when you’re suddenly in charge of every penny. I learnt this the hard way during my first week when I bought more food than I could possibly eat. It turned out that six pints of milk for one person was a bit ambitious! Now, I plan my meals before my grocery shop so that every purchase has a purpose.
Here’s my advice: Make a budget plan and think twice before spending; planning your purchases ahead of time can save you from regret later. Always set aside money for rent and essentials before splurging on social activities and don’t forget to ask about student discounts — they’re everywhere and can save you a lot!
