Preparing for a successful job interview: What I learnt as a Student Ambassador for Digital Education
Student Ambassador for Digital Education, Taniya Khan shares her top tips for acing any job interview
As this academic year draws to a close, we have this sudden rush to step up the success ladder. For me, it all began while I was ransacking JobLink and I stumbled upon a part-time role as a Student Ambassador for Digital Education. As an international student, I was well aware that this opportunity would boost my confidence and owing to my background as a digital journalist, this opportunity seemed like the perfect fit. I submitted my application without a moment's hesitation.
I first felt the thrill of excitement when an invitation to interview popped up in my email notifications. It is daunting to realise that you must showcase the finest aspects of your personality in a 15-minute conversation. However, with a mindful approach and sufficient preparation, it can become an effortless endeavour. Here are five tips to crack a job interview that will get you a step ahead in landing your dream job!
1. Do your research
It’s a rule of thumb, getting the homework right always gives you an edge. Make sure you look through the company profile and familiarise yourself with the job role. You can find out about the organisation’s goals, principles, and most recent accomplishments. With this information, you’ll be able to explain how you can benefit the company and show that you have prepared for the interview. Prior to my interview, I aligned my skills and experience to the job description and mapped out my interview answers. For example, the role included blog writing and I gathered examples from my previous work experience to demonstrate my suitability for the role.
2. Be equipped for the interview questions
I believe that the first five minutes of your interview are crucial and could determine whether the employer should hire you. Laying odds on this belief, you can prepare and practice for the typical first-round questions of any interview. For my interview, I prepared thoughtful and concise responses to questions like “Tell us about yourself” and“What intrigues you about this position?”, that highlighted my relevant qualifications and experiences. Don’t forget to include specific examples that illustrate how you’ve effectively used these skills in past roles or projects. Your confidence will boost, and you’ll be better equipped for the interview.
3. Be aware of your body language
Your first impression is your last impression. Dress professionally and in line with the company’s culture and be mindful of your body language by maintaining eye contact with a smile. These nonverbal indicators show how excited and interested you are about this opportunity. My interview was online and I chose an outfit that exuded professionalism and created a respectable impression. I also ensured that my Internet connection was stable to continue with seamless and uninterrupted communication.
4. Prepare to ask questions
At the end of the interview, you will likely be given the chance to ask questions however, most of the candidates miss this opportunity. You don’t have to bombard them with a swarm of questions, instead, prepare a list of thoughtful questions that reflect your genuine interest in the company and the position. This can range from inquiring about company’s future goals to knowing the team dynamics. I enquired about what other opportunities a Student Ambassador would experience within their role. Asking thoughtful questions also helps you to determine whether the role you are applying for matches your professional objectives.
5. Follow-up after the interview
Send a personalised email of thanks to the interviewer after the interview to show your appreciation for the chance to speak with them. Reiterate your interest in the job at this time and quickly discuss any major elements from the interview that really struck a chord with you. This demonstrates your professionalism, keen eye for detail, and interest in the position.
So far, my experience as a Student Ambassador has been rewarding and it all started with a successful interview! Navigating the interview process might be overwhelming at first, but once you land one, you will gain more confidence and learn how to leave an indelible first impression that lasts. Good luck!
