My GenAI journey: learning smarter, not harder.
From suggesting content ideas to proofreading, you might use GenAI to support your learning at university. However, it’s unrealistic to assume that a single technology can do your studying for you! Here’s how I use GenAI during my studies, plus some advice on using GenAI mindfully and avoiding common pitfalls.
Using Microsoft 365 Copilot.
Copilot is the University-approved GenAI platform. Here are some examples of how I use Copilot to personalise my learning experience on different Microsoft apps:
- Word: summarising, translating, and reviewing documents.
- Excel: suggesting formulas and chart techniques, offering insights.
- Outlook: summarising the inbox, coaching, and drafting new mail.
- PowerPoint: designing presentations and speaker’s notes, suggesting layouts. Speaker coach is a great tool to prepare for presentations, evaluating pacing, pitch, and more.
If you log into Copilot with your university email and password, you can access a range of helpful functions. The ‘Create’ feature gives you the ability to create workbooks, CVs, flyers, and surveys from already existing templates. This helps you to have the perfect format set in place for you to build on your university and personal projects.
Keep an eye out for the ‘Agent’ feature where you can create a personalised agent to guide you and provide personalised advice and feedback on any topic you desire. I would recommend trying out the ‘Learning Coach’ agent for test preparation. It offers targeted study plans, practice questions, and simulations. Additionally, for language practice, it provides interactive lessons, vocabulary drills, grammar tips, and conversational exercises. The ‘Agent’ feature offers multiple customisable agents from ‘Quiz Tutors’ to ‘Career Coaches’ and is a function worth exploring!
AI in examinations.
Some modules encourage GenAI in their assignments, while others strongly prohibit it. Leeds uses a traffic light model to help you understand if, and how, you can use GenAI in an assessment. If you’re unsure about what applies to your specific course or module, always check with your tutor and complete the mandatory AI training.
GenAI has supported me with essays, assignments, and exams. It can improve the clarity of written communications by creating essay outlines, assisting in structuring arguments, or even proofreading. As for exams, AI can generate topic-specific flashcards or personalised quizzes to help keep learning quick, fun, and engaging. Make sure that you can use GenAI in your assessment before starting, just in case!
Using AI mindfully.
While GenAI tools can be used to automate tasks and boost productivity, it’s crucial to approach these platforms with caution and responsibility.
1. Always double-check outputs
AI-generated content can sometimes include inaccuracies, outdated information, or even fabricated details. Be sure to verify and cross-check resources.
2. Use your own judgement
While AI can provide its own suggestions and ideas, the responsibility ultimately lies with you. It’s important that the content reflects you and your ideas. Make sure you don’t plagiarise or commit academic misconduct.
3. Protect sensitive information
Ensure you only upload content, such as journal articles, to Copilot. Don’t upload or share any personal information with GenAI.
When you can use AI.
If you do want to use GenAI at Uni, it’s important to get clear guidance on how to it responsibly and confidently. You should completing the mandatory AI training to make sure your using GenAI in alignment with the University’s expectations. I’ve held back from relying on GenAI too much. I didn’t want my writing to be generic and uniform and lose the creativity and individuality that defines my voice. Considering the endless world of opportunities with AI functions, it’s important to use AI responsibly. Make sure it’s used as a tool to support your learning, not do your learning for you.
