International Women’s Day in Leeds 2023

International Women’s Day is an international, annual event that takes place on 8th March to celebrates the success and achievement of women and highlights ongoing issues such as gender equality and abuse against women.

Every year the United Nations decide a theme for International Women’s Day, and this year the theme is “DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality”. The theme aims to show demonstrate and protect “the rights of women and girls in digital spaces” which is becoming increasingly more relevant as we experience the rapid technological advancements of the 21st century.

Here are a few events that are being held across Leeds, on and off campus and are suited to a range of different interests so that you can get involved and celebrate International Women’s Day in Leeds!

Things that are happening on campus:

The Leeds Women in Leadership Society- The Empower Conference 2023

WHAT: The Empower Conference

WHEN: Wednesday 8th March (09:00–19:30)

WHERE: Riley Smith Theatre, Leeds University Union

This is a conference that has been organised by the Leeds Women in Leadership society and is aimed to empower students to achieve their goals, irrespective of their gender, ethnicity or socioeconomic status within the world of work. The membership for this society is free but tickets for this event start at £17.49. Social Run for International Women’s Day

WHAT: : 3 mile Social Run

WHEN: Wednesday 8th March at 18.30

WHERE: Meet at Cromer Terrace near the Union

This is a social run in order to raise money for Leeds Women’s Aid, it is open to all abilities and anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary. It has been organised by the University’s Cross-Country society and they have partnered up with The Right to Walk and Students Against Sexual Harassment and Assault. The three-mile run will start at Cromer Terrace, and will end back at the Union where people are welcome to come for drinks at Terrace afterwards. The run is free to attend, but a donation for Leeds Women’s Aid would be greatly appreciated. If you don’t want to run you can still make a donation on the JustGiving page. International Women’s Day Dance HIIT at the Edge

WHAT: Dance HIIT

WHEN: Wednesday 8th March (08:30–09:30)

WHERE: The Edge (Leeds University Campus) Sports Hall 2

If exercising and keeping fit is your thing, or you just enjoy dancing then this activity is definitely for you. It is organised by the female-led fitness society called Girls Training Together and consists of a fun and choreographed workout. It is free to attend for all women, gender fluid and non-binary people, but please ensure that you have a membership for this society which can be bought on the LUU website. Things that are taking place in Leeds:

International Women’s Day Extravaganza

WHAT: International Women’s Day Extravaganza Leeds

WHEN: Saturday 4th March (19–22:00)

WHERE: Leftbank Leeds, Cardigan Road

This event has been created in order to highlight the amazing work of women’s organisations in Leeds. The event will contain an amalgamation of different activities such as music, comedy and poetry. Tickets start from £8 and you can buy your tickets here!

Women’s Quiz and Karaoke Night for International Women’s Day

WHAT: Quiz and Karaoke Night

WHERE: Thursday 9th March 2023 (19.00–23:00)

WHEN: Headrow House, Leeds

This is a really fun event that is open to all women and non-binary people and raises money for Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds. You can come as a team or you can buy a single ticket and then be matched with a team. Tickets are from £6.13 and doors open at 19:00 with the quiz starting at 19:30 followed by karaoke at 21:00

Women’s Circle: Celebrating International Women’s Day

WHAT: An opportunity to celebrate all things woman.

WHERE: Ookushana Workshop (94b Harrogate Road Leeds, LS7 4LZ)

WHEN: Wednesday 8th March 2023 (19:30–21:30)

This event is held by an artist and art psychotherapist and provides an opportunity to be creative and to experience collaboration with other like-minded people. It features meditation, journaling and a collaborative creation circle. Tickets start at £11 and you can buy your tickets here!
