Watching everyone around you return home for summer can be tough if you are staying in Leeds. Whether Leeds has become your new home, or you are unable to travel back home, there are plenty of places to explore and fun activities to do to help keep you occupied over the summer break.

As a final year student who has spent plenty of summers in Leeds, here are my top tips to make Leeds feel more like home this summer.

Tip 1: Familiarise yourself with the local area

Knowing your surroundings and where different places are located can be hugely beneficial in helping you to feel more settled. When I first moved to Leeds, I went on lots of little walks to see where places like the local corner shop (or boss man) were. I also got the bus into town to get a better understanding of how the Leeds bus system worked and explored popular areas like the Corn Exchange.

I also travelled slightly further afield to places including Roundhay Park and Kirkstall Abbey and spent lots of time going on wholesome walks in nature. This really helped me to relax and feel at ease in my new city.

Tip 2: Keep in touch with your family and friends back at home

If you are feeling homesick, scheduling a weekly facetime with family and friends can be a great way to stay connected with your loved ones whilst not taking away your time to meet new people and enjoy hobbies. When I first moved to University, I used to call my mum up most days and it really helped me to feel at home in a place that felt unfamiliar.

Tip 3: Join a club

Although University societies do not run throughout the holidays, there are so many local clubs that you can get involved in. Whether you enjoy going on peaceful walks, art, running or dancing, Facebook often has different groups that you can join depending on your interests. People tend to post about upcoming events and socials. This is a great opportunity to make some new friends and have some fun.

Tip 4: Get into a routine

For me, getting into a daily routine helps me to feel settled and organised. Getting a part-time job is a great idea as you will meet lots of new people whilst staying busy and earning money. You could also think about joining the local gym and implementing that into your daily routine.

Tip 5: Make your room cosy

Decorating your room in a way that’s tailored to you can help you to create your own sanctuary. Buying plants, getting some nice blankets, putting up some pictures of family and friends and hanging some fairy lights are all things that you can do to make your room as comfortable as possible. I also recommend keeping your room as tidy as possible as this will make your space a place that’s peaceful and safe.

Tip 5: Look after yourself

Last but no means least, make sure you are taking the time to take care of yourself properly. It can be difficult staying somewhere so far away from home, so it is important to go easy on yourself and take time for you. I recommend making some of your favourite meals, watching your favourite Netflix series and getting enough rest. This will help you feel ready for each new day.
