  1. The laptop vs. notebook debate

Every lecture seems to be soundtracked by the tapping of fingers on MacBook keyboards…and then there’s the lone notebook scribbler. Whilst everyone has their own way of studying and learning, which is the best choice? Well, it depends. If you like to google all the words you don’t understand in real time or find that annotating lecture slides works for you, then taking notes on your laptop may be the best option. However, if you feel that physically writing your notes helps you to retain more information than keyboard tapping, then go with pen and paper. We all know that the best part of writing out your notes is the opportunity to use your highlighters! If you don’t have your laptop with you but need online resources, there are lots of computer clusters that you can use instead!

2. Pencil case

Even if you choose the laptop route, it’s always good to bring the essentials of a pen and a pencil with you to campus. You never know when you might need them!

3. Lunch and snacks

Brains that work hard need fuel! If you’re going to be on campus for a while, bring snacks with you such as cereal bars and fruit to help you to stay energised throughout the day. Don’t forget to hydrate too: bring your bottle and fill it up at one of over 200 water fountains across campus. If you’re looking for some lunch inspiration, check out Meg’s batch cooking blog. Don’t forget to use the student kitchen in LUU for microwaves and hot water!

4. Student ID

Aside from being essential to access all the great student discounts, your Student ID is your key to the library! Make sure you pop it in your wallet so you can access study spaces, printing, and book loans.

5. Folder

Lots of paper is usually handed out at the start of term. This could be module schedules, reading lists or other resources. Make sure you pack an A4 folder to keep all your sheets neat and tidy.

6. Headphones

Everyone needs their library tunes! Or maybe everyone just needs something to drown out the natter on Level 10 of Eddy B when mid-essay flow. It’s always good to bring your headphones to campus as you never know what to expect!

7. A Charger

Forgot to charge your phone last night and now have 10% battery to get through the day? Bring your USB charging cable with you and plug in at any library or café across campus to grab a bit of extra juice to get you through that library stint!
