As a university student, there are a number of ways you can get financial support. Whether it’s a long term loan, short-term funding, bursaries or a bank account that’s right for student life; there are lots of ways to manage your money.

Worried about your money? Understanding your money, how to budget, how to make more of your money and knowing what to do if things are going wrong are essential skills for life. Here are links and guides to help keep your finances on track.

Financial funding that’s available to students

Read about the bursaries, loan and/or funding you could be getting. These are often means tested which simply means that they change each year and will depend on the income of your family’s income. Check out the Student Finance for more information.

You might be able to get additional financial help based on your personal circumstances. Whether you’re married or have caring responsibilities, or you have a disability or belong to an estranged family, find out about extra funding you might be eligible for.

Bursaries

A bursary is like a grant that you often don’t have to pay back. Each university has its own bursary scheme that helps students. This includes support for students who might be from low-income backgrounds, first generation scholarships or for students to take part in field trips, extra-curricular activities or study abroad opportunities. Most bursaries are awarded automatically but you can speak to the Student Finance Team or your school to find out if there’s anything you’re eligible for.

Financial Assistance Fund

We know things don’t always go to plan, that’s why we have a financial assistance fund that you can apply for which you don’t have to pay back. If you’ve taken out the maximum student loan that’s available to you and still finding that you’re short of money, find out whether you’re eligible for additional funds.

We know some students are wary of applying for additional funding. If you are finding things difficult, don’t suffer in silence — reach out and find out how we can support you.

There’s lots of help and support available — just ask!

Getting the right student bank account

Whether you currently have a bank account or are looking to get one, it’s important that you make sure you choose an account that is suitable for student life. Have a look online to compare accounts — some will offer you a large interest free overdraft while others will offer you give-aways like free student railcards or cash to switch accounts. Pick offers that are most valuable to you!

If you have an overdraft, keep an eye on your limit and stay within it or you’ll be charged daily by the bank. And remember, don’t feel as though you have to stay with the same bank throughout your studies — move and see what freebies you can get!

What other financial support can you get?

Alongside your Student Finance, you may be able to claim universal credit (a Government benefit) depending on your personal circumstances. Check the Government website for details.

Some charitable trusts also offer additional funding for students. They’ll have their own criteria depending on who is funding them. Find out more about charitable trusts and scholarships.

Finally…

Whatever your situation, we’ve probably come across it before and can help you so don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for support.
