From stress to success: preparing for exams
It’s normal to feel a bit worried about exams. Given the pressure to achieve excellence, many students can feel overwhelmed. Here are five tried and tested tips for managing anxiety during these trying times.
1. Take Regular Breaks
Taking regular breaks is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind during exam season. It’s easy to become absorbed in your studies and forget to give your brain a break, but not doing so might be detrimental. Every hour or so, you should take a brief break to rest so that you can return to your task with a fresh focus. Regular breaks are an excellent method to manage stress, whether it’s a quick yoga practice, taking a walk outside, or just a snack.
2. Get Enough Sleep
During exam season, getting enough sleep is crucial. Poor attention, memory issues, and elevated stress levels can result from lack of sleep. For optimal brain function, try to get at least 7–8 hours of sleep each night. Try relaxation methods like meditation or relaxing music before going to bed if you have trouble falling asleep.
3. Exercise Regularly
A great method to reduce stress during exam season is to exercise. It not only releases endorphins that can lift your spirits, but it also promotes improved sleep and focus. Even if it’s only one short walk or a yoga session, try to fit in some type of exercise each day. Finding an exercise, you enjoy is pivotal because you’ll be more likely to persist with it.
4. Talk to Others
Exam season can feel isolating, but it’s vital to keep in mind that you’re not alone. It can be helpful to talk to friends or family members about how you’re feeling to release tension and obtain some perspective. Don’t be hesitant to contact the support and well-being services at your university if you need more help.
5. Plan Ahead
Finally, preparation might reduce tension throughout the exam period. Don’t wait until the last minute to revise, and make sure you have a plan for how much time you’ll spend on each topic. You’ll feel a greater sense of control and less stressed. To avoid burning out, be careful to schedule time for rest and self-care activities.
When developing study plans, just remember to prioritise what works well for you and not for comparison with anyone else.
