Four things to do if you’re leaving Leeds this holiday (and one if you’re not)
The end of term is almost here — how did that happen? You might be ready for a break, or you’re feeling like everything is happening too quickly. Whatever you’re thinking, we’ve put together a checklist for you to help you prepare like a pro this holiday.
1. Get your studies up to date
For many of you, assessments will be something you’ll be starting to prepare for. Take some extra time to make sure you’ve got everything you need for your studies. There’s nothing worse than realising your laptop charger is still in your room, or you forgot to take out that one book from the library. Talking of books …have you got the right books for the holiday? Here’s the library website so you can plan to get them.
If you’re in Leeds, a change of scene and pace like a holiday can make studying for your assessments that bit harder. It can be really helpful to make a list of what assignments you have, when they need doing, and make a study schedule.
Any deadlines before the holidays? Assignments that need finishing are really important, and you know if you’re travelling to see family and friends over the holidays, you’ll be pleased everything is ticked off your list before you go.
2. Plan your spring clean
If you don’t live in Leeds all year round, this holiday is the perfect opportunity to start your move (really!). Think about what can come home with you, that you really won’t miss over the next couple of months. Things like your big winter coat, clothes you’ve never worn, or even some of your decor. Why not plan this now; the future you will be eternally grateful you’re not having to get rid of a Christmas tree or old study notes next June!
Even if Leeds is your full-time home, putting aside some time to have a clear out will help refresh your space ahead of assessments. You can donate what you don’t need to your local community hubs, that way you’re helping your friends and neighbours, as well as cleaning your space.
Donating your excess things is always a good shout. Check out this guide to donating unwanted items from our very own Sustainability team. You could also make some money by selling your unwanted textbooks, clothes, electricals and media and get some extra cash. Check out Gumtree or Facebook Marketplace. Also, don’t forget the current students Facebook group!
Also, take the bins out and clean the fridge. Thank us when you get back!
I’ve got food I won’t eat
Foodbanks in the local area have had another difficult year. We’ve put together a list of places you can donate your unwanted food and help those who may need it. Also, these foodbanks are open to you if you need it. If you’re struggling for money over the holidays, don’t struggle on your own. Visit our cost of living student hub for more information.

3. Keep in touch with your friends if you’re away
It’s been a difficult year for lots of people, and some of your friends might not be looking forward to the holiday. Sometimes this time of year can be difficult for lots of reasons.
Make sure you’ve got contact details and be a lovely friend to people. A nice message or a quick call might make someone’s day. Don’t be afraid to get in touch with your friends too — speaking often makes a big difference.
If you’re worried about how your mental health will be while you’re away, make a plan for support now. Get contact details, support numbers and websites, and a plan so you can avoid triggers and manage how you’re feeling. Even a list of activities to do, places to walk to or people to speak to can make a big difference.
If you find yourself struggling, check out the support and wellbeing available at the University.
4. Keep your house safe if you’re away
Don’t let your house become a target while you’re away. There’s a few simple things to do:
- Take your valuables with you when you leave and don’t leave expensive items in view of windows
- Think about investing in a light timer — this turns lights on and off and gives the impression someone is in the house.
- Lock any windows if you can. If they don’t shut properly or there’s any problem with door locks, get in touch with your landlord or arrange a repair immediately.
- If you’re locking up your uni house, make sure the last person to leave knows to lock the door, take the bins out, and check the windows.

5. It’s good to be home
If you’re a commuter student and/or live in Leeds full time, it can be hard to make a holiday feel like a holiday. Whilst you might be glad for a break from the commute, make sure you’re still taking time to have a rest from Uni. Whether you’re happy to stay home and chill, or want to get out and explore, this holiday is here to give your brain a break.
Not sure what’s happening over the break? The For Students website has loads of information, from wellbeing, finance and help if you’re arriving in Leeds over the holidays.
