Being part of the International Welcome Team at Leeds is not just a job; it’s an opportunity to be a pivotal part of an international student’s journey. I decided to become part of the team to assure new international students that they are not alone in their adventure.

From the moment students decide to embark on this exciting chapter of their lives, the International Welcome Team becomes one of their go-to contacts offering help, guidance, and reassurance as they navigate the maze of preparations before arrival.

As part of the team, I promptly respond to student queries providing useful information. Whether it’s helping them to rearrange their transport if their journey is delayed, giving confirmation on their welcome food box, or simply offering a friendly welcome, every email is an opportunity to make a positive impact. Another role of the International Welcome team is arranging airport pick-up service. When they arrive, we stand ready at the airport, eager to greet students with open arms and a warm smile. There’s something truly special about being amongst the first faces that students encounter upon arriving in a new country.

But my role doesn’t end there. Beyond the initial greetings and assistance at the airport, I was involved with hosting social events at Global Café and for the Buddy Scheme.

The Global Café provides a welcoming environment where students can connect through sharing stories of their home countries, exchanging cultural insights, or simply making new friends. From giving tips on navigating campus life to providing insights into local culture and customs, I was able to help new students acclimate to their new surroundings.

The Buddy Scheme is a programme designed to pair students who share similar interests. As part of the International Welcome Team, I have assisted at socials by connecting students and encouraging them to share experiences and support each other as they embark on their Leeds adventure.

Being part of the International Welcome Team at Leeds has been a journey of personal growth, offering more than just a job. I’ve gained invaluable skills which are transferable to many other professional roles.

One of the best parts of this role has been working as part of a team with different people and organisations. Interactions with diverse individuals has enhanced my communication skills and has allowed me to engage with different cultures. The fast-paced nature of this role has given with the ability to thrive under pressure. From managing multiple tasks simultaneously to handling unforeseen challenges with composure and efficiency, the experience gained from working in such an environment has developed my resilience and adaptability.

What has made my work truly exciting and motivating isn’t just the tasks I’ve performed, but the opportunity to offer a warm welcome and provide support to international students. Being part of the Welcome Team has given me the privilege of making the students’ experiences away from home smooth and enjoyable as they embark on their University of Leeds journey.
